For Jon Gibson

about

Jon Gibson and his music were a big influence on me from when I was a teenager and heard his first LP in 1973 and attended a concert of his music at The Kitchen in 1975. I visited him in his loft a few years after that and we were friends ever since. During my years with the ensemble Ne(x)tworks (2006-2019), I had the opportunity to play some of Jon's compositions, sometimes directed by Jon himself. In January, 2020, I went through all of Ne(x)tworks' recordings of Jon's music we recorded over the years, some with Jon joining us. It was great to hear so much of his music in such a condensed period of time. (NxW then released an album of his music for Jon's 80th birthday, available on Ne(x)tworks' Bandcamp page.)

Jon was fascinated by patterns, permutations and timbre. He was also one of the few "minimalists" who built improvisation into his pieces as a compositional element. With his recent passing, I'm now starting to realize what an important, unique, and understated figure he was in the development of this, then, new experimental music of the late '60s and '70s that strived to explore the pure essence of musical form and expression.

Back in January, with Jon's music so present in my mind's ear, I created this solo for analog electronics, recorded in real time, using pattern, permutation, and improvisation. Thank you, Jon, for your friendship and inspiration. This is just a small reflection of your presence in my life.
