Miguel Frasconi: BugBrand & Buchla audio devices

Tom Hamilton: Nord Modular Keyboard

Both Frasconi and Hamilton originated their experimental techniques with the original voltage controlled modular synthesizers. Performing styles and capabilities changed as the physical components of the electrical world – knobs, switches, sensors - began to augment and redefine the types of gestural control now possible. Keyboards could control elements other than pitch or could be eliminated altogether. The music here represents a divergence in present instrument choice. While Frasconi employs modern analog versions based on the original designs of that era and controlled mainly with a joystick and knobs, Hamilton takes a "virtual analog" approach; the sounds are conceived and edited with an analog sensibility and graphical language but are generated in the digital realm.
